Los Angels, Is Mazda looking to ride the coattails of the successful 2013 CX-5 crossover? If this new report is accurate, the Japanese automaker will be expanding its lineup with a new, smaller SUV based on the subcompact Mazda 2.
At just 155.5 inches long, the Mazda 2 will make for quite a tiny crossover; for reference, the Mazda-3-based CX-5 (pictured) is 179.3 inches long. AutoExpress reports that the upcoming crossover will wear the CX-3 moniker, but may be a Euro-only affair due to its diminutive size. Expect a slew of Skyactiv chassis and powertrain components, including two new engines: a 1.6-liter diesel able to achieve around 80 mpg on the European cycle and an all-new, gas 1.3-liter turbo four. AE says that the CX-3 may end up with only front-wheel drive because two-wheel-drive small crossovers apparently outsell their all-wheel-drive siblings in Europe.
If AE is correct, the CX-3 should go on sale in Europe by the end of 2014 with a price tag around £13,000 (about $21,000). The little Mazda crossover won’t be alone in the subcompact-crossover class in Europe: the Chevrolet Trax and Opel Mokka both go on sale next year, Fiat already offers the jacked-up Panda 4×4, and Ford has plans to bring the tiny EcoSport to Europe in the near future. Our diminutive SUV options aren’t as plentiful in the States, as we only have the 2013 Buick Encore that goes on sale next month.
